Introduction
Rising the Bar (四個女仔三個BAR, literally “Four Girls, Three Bars”)is a TV drama
that was presented by Hong Kong Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) a few
months ago. The story is talking about struggles that a group of barristers and
legal trainees came through and showed how they got over those struggles and
doubts.
About Rising the Bar
In
the beginning, I do not know why the drama named as四個女仔三個BAR, and I guessed the “Bar”
is referred the characters’ relationships. After searching the meaning of “Bar”
in the name of “Four Girls, Three Bars”,
I found that it is referred to barristers as barristers is also called Bar. In fact,
in the end of the drama, the four girls in the story, three of them are
barristers and one of them is solicitor. Therefore, TVB did made the name of
the drama meaningful this time.
Image of legal professionals
We
were told that being a lawyer is a good career in the future when we were small
because lawyer is a high-paying job in older generations’ minds. In fact, from
long time ago, the image of lawyer is positive, and this job represents high or
middle-class lifestyle, stable income and better life. Therefore, our parents
wanted us to become this kind of professional when we were small.
Promotion of being a lawyer in the
past and in this drama
In
the past, TV dramas always show that the why it is good to be a lawyer. The characters
were always finished their studies and started their career already. This kind
of presentation can help to promote how good to be a lawyer but it is not
realistic at all. However, in Rising the Bar,
it showed that the recruitment was not as easy as people thought. They had to
be the trainees first and study more in their internship period, after a year,
they finally be barristers and solicitor. Moreover, they were probably not paid
or being low-paid in the internship period. And we can say that it is much more
difficult to be a lawyer than we thought before.
Keeping the traditional “formula” of TVB
style
Although
there are some parts of the drama were improved compared to past TVB dramas,
some traditions were also kept in Rising the
Bar. For example, living in a big flat. No matter which character,
barristers or trainees, they were living in an unreasonably big flat or even
house. In addition, main characters are all become successful in the end of the
drama. All of the trainees became barristers and solicitor as they wanted at
the end, no one would fail anyway.
Conclusion
The
cast of this drama is also special compare with other dramas as there are no
really famous TVB actors or actresses and their acting was not as disappointed
as I expected. To conclude, this is a drama that good to watch in leisure time
for people who do not fuss about the situation in reality.
