Online Review: Music Album - Fly Me to the Earth

After a long period of disappearance, Don Li released his new album named ‘Fly Me to the Earth’ in 2015. His album had been boosted up by the netizens in Hong Kong because of the new approach that Don Li had tried to ‘impress the crowd’ with his remake of the song ‘Silly Girl’ (傻女) using tearful vocal. The album is funded by Don Li himself with 6 digit costs, these had been evidences he really wants to express himself using this album.

From the cover art of the album, we could already get a sense of playful and uniqueness, which tells us to seize his album with fun. The songs are covers of the oldies in the 80s and 90s.

“Isn't the Night like This You’d Miss Me So?” (是不是這樣的夜晚你才會這樣的想起我)
Compared to the original song from Jacky Wu (吳宗憲) with the soft voice, Li had attempted to cover this song in a setting of a drunken guy, with many environmental sound effects like kicking can while he sings, and added accordion and violin to increase the dramatic changes of ‘the night’ he represents.

“Ten Girls” (十個女仔)
Li together with Tomy Wai (韋啟良)and Derek Kwok (郭子健) sang this song together, and attempts to remaster the songs from Sam Hui (許冠傑) in 1979. Although the way he sings seemed casual and joyful, this song seemed lack of new elements since the arrangement is still like the 80s.

“Mei Lan Mei Lan I Love You” (梅蘭梅蘭我愛你)
This song is one of the best songs in the sense of arrangement in his album. Adding the piano bridge of “Loving You” and the electric music in second verse had increased the atmosphere of the song, which can compete with Bobby Liu (劉文正), the original singer.

“Moonlight in the City” (城裡的月光)
Li had made the first male vocal version of Mavis Hee’s (許美靜) song, together with Harmonica and soft guitar had successfully remake the sense of loneliness and hope.

“Liu Fei Fei” (流菲飛)
The arrangement of this song seemed carefree and had challenged the Faye Wong (王菲) version of the same song. Compared to Faye, Li had a new way to express ‘free’, but the sense of free sounds like casual more than actual freedom.

“Proverbs of Love” (愛的箴言)
Mixed with gothic and classic style to the love song, the arranger had created massive contrast to the version of Teresa Tang (鄧麗君) which had enriched by piano and soft vocal. Li uses harder vocal and deeper breathe to bring the impact of truthfulness toward the song.

“Irreplaceable, Only You” (唯獨你是不可取替)
The version of Li had added the spaceship elements into the song, which had reinforced the feeling of division of love, like the relationship between spaceship and the base. Compared to the version of Andy Hui (許志安) in the 90s, this had surely added intensity from perspective of atmosphere.

“Silly Girl” (傻女)
This new approach of singing tearfully is adding emotion on top of the lyrics. The crying voice could surely add the dynamic of sadness and emotionally craziness of the breaking up. Of course, compared to the version of Priscilla Chan (陳慧嫻), the song is intensified with strong emotion and created the deep impression of no ways to let off the anger and remorse from breaking up.

With the new arrangement of the old songs, Don Li had surely encoded the message that music can be played with this fun way. Still, sadly, the music industry of Hong Kong had become factory of formula music, and all music become the same, which makes all listeners decoded the message in a different way. Li had at least tried to have a new approach to music, but it seems Hong Kong people had been brainwashed by all mainstream music, which they cannot enjoy or even allowed new kinds of music. This is somehow a big issue existing among us.
