Online review: Break Up 100 (分手100次)

Break Up 100 (分手100) is a Hong Kong film which directed by Lawrence Cheng (鄭丹瑞) and It showed on 1st August, 2014. It is a story about a pair of couple who are Sam (Ekin Cheng) and Nam (Chrissie Chau) have been romantically in a relationship for eight years. When they have quarrel often over extremely trivial matters, Nam always wanted to break up and every time was Sam to apologize in order to maintain their relationship. Furthermore they have broken up 99 times already but they got back together again 99 times as well and it can say they use “break up” to keep the relationship. When they open a cafe and promise not to say break up again and they story will expand from the cafe.

This is a genre film about romance and the main theme of this film was not to break up easily. It code this again and more detail after the end of the film by voice-over that was no relationship is destined and no love is deservedly so if you meet someone willing to hold your hand tightly, do not release your hand readily. Moreover Genre consists of specific systems of expectation that mean what audiences expect to see in the film. For this film, the audiences will expect to see the love story between Sam and Nam and because of the name of the film audiences can get some hints to know it is a relationship always breaks up. As it is a love story, some iconography are clearly show such as symbol of heart, couple things like cups and rings, dim light to create an romance environment etc.

In addition, Nam is the one always right (win) and predominant in the relationship so it seems that Sam has the lower status. Sam does not have any male chauvinism but on the contrary. Furthermore people always have the stereotype that boss will be the men and the one to inheritance. However瑞記 (Ivana Wong) inherit family’s cha chaan teng and many staffs are men. This can reflect the society nowadays that is men can be led by women which reflect the status of women is rising. Also Nam demand for sex actively show equality of gender because if women play an active role for sex usually have a negative image while in the film did not.

Besides, Sam hits on the idea of having a break up mini storage facility for people to store evocative mementoes of past relationships temporarily and Sam will use some sentences to describe the relationship. This represent every relationship has different unforgettable feelings and memories. Lastly it shows Sam and Nam how to change themselves to make the relationship more balance so as to maintain it. This romance comedy can arouse a resonance for the audiences because everyone has their love story and the feelings are similar. Moreover when the film 完了(end), it add “” to become沒完沒了 to express the wish of every couple the relationship will  “never end” . Even breaks up 100 times but still holding hand together. Thus, it attracts many people to watch the film and its box office hit 5 million in 5 days.         (550 words)
