Introduction

Club is a TVB drama which was first released on 21st April 2014.
Plot description:
Six
girls group together to become a dance group and name it as “M Club” in 1985.
They were very good friends and willing to help each other.One of a girl name
Julie got pregnant before marriage .The rest of them assist her to give birth
to the baby. However, because of post-marriage illness and lack of concern from
friends, Julie decided to abandon the baby Lorelei to orphanage.She framed up
that the five of them lost her daughter and tore up with them. Five of them felt
guilty and these six friends became strangers. 27 years later, they solved
their friendship problems and danced together again .Lorelei admits Julie as
her real mother. M Club is rebuilt.
Collective memory:
The
main characters were situated in 1980s when they were young. Therefore 70s and
80s elements are contained in this drama. Audience are coherent to those 70s
and 80s elements as those are their collective memory. In the drama, songs and long
sleeve blue uniforms are the examples of 70s and 80s.
Our
identities are grounded in the past .We have our collective memory .Memory is
at the very core of identity .Collective memory is embodied in memory
industries. In this drama, large selection of 70s and 80s music inevitably had
to be quoted, in order to evoke resonate in popular culture.Lots of
corresponding songs such as famous songs of Alan Tam and Danny Chan as the
interlude help advance the plot and audience feel resonate . Alan Tam
personally sings for one part of the plot .It facilitates audience’s discussion.
Memory
connects who we are to who we once were.For example, first love. First love in
1980s was very pure and shy. Only lyrics and songs at that time can bring back
that kind of feeling, such as Samantha Lam’s”First love” and Danny Chan’s “Love
Trailer” presenting in the drama. Songs nowadays are unable to present the
feeling of 1980s as the time has changed.Memory connects to who are to who we
once were. 70,80s memories are induced from audience’s heart.Cultural context
have been constructed to recognize how they were in 1980s and how they are
today . In addition, “M Club “apply the elements of 1980s,such as McDonald's
Tongue-twister, a sister magazine, and 30 hamburgers bets.1980s term “fishball
stalls” has been used in drama , which would not used nowsdays .Audience’s
collective memory had been reinforced by these details .
Construction of identities in
television
Identity
conformation processes easily become ideological.There are cultural identities construction
in “M Club”. Julie is an immigrant from mainlander. When she is in secondary
school, she got discriminated by other students in Hong Kong. Because
she has unclear accent of Cantonese . She was named as “Chan Mei” (燦妹).Hong Kong people have
clear language difference with mainlanders.On the other side,Miss Mo is a local
Hongkonger. She talks Cantonese fluently and was popular in school.
Theory of articulation
There
is a form of connection making a unity of two elements, under certain conditions.In
this drama, mainlander can be regarded as selfishness and greedy. Julie used Miss
Mo to learn better Cantonese. She liked Alan ,but Alan liked Miss Mo. Therefore
she used ways to break them up.She used men to make money.Regarding mainlanders
as selfishness can be related to nowadays .Mainlanders don’t follow rules in
Hong Kong. They defecate everywhere in Hong Kong, such as in the MTR station.
They also want to get welfare of Hong Kong without paying efforts.
However,
Miss Mo is a Hongkonger . She thinks positive , performs filial piety and be responsible
.Her image matches with the signification iconography of “Below the Lion Rock
Series”. Hongkongers thinks positive , performs filial piety and be responsible

Club “ is a TVB drama describing 70s and 80s popular culture .It brings collective
memory to audience. Cultural identities of mainlanders and hongkoners are
constructed in the drama
