Online review: Tomorrow is another day (再戰明天)

Introduction
Tomorrow is another day was a television drama series broadcasting on TVB Jade from 6th Oct 2014 to 31st Oct 2014. Its theme was about Hong Kong Correctional Services Department (HKCSD). During the shooting process, HKCSD supported TVB and came to its assistance. Similar to other television drama series produced by TVB, romantic elements were added in the narrative of Tomorrow is another day in order to add interest to the series.

Content
The series talked about HKCSD Principal Officer Man Sheung-sing (portrayed by Lawrence Ng), aged 44, worked in the Stanley Prison to monitor prisoners’ discipline and teach them to obey the rules in the prison. The sector Man worked in was defined as the most dangerous as the sector had lots of male prisoners, who committed serious crime for life imprisonment, being jailed there. However, he was very smart and courageous to deal with any violent incidents initiated by the dangerous prisoners there. On the other hand, HKCSD Officer Kaka Yiu (portrayed by Kate Tsui), aged 28, worked in the Lo Wu Correctional Institution and she had no enthusiasm in her job at the beginning but after she experienced a female prisoner called Chu-chu (portrayed by Harriet Yeung) who committed suicide because of her, she finally found out the real meaning of being a HKCSD Officer – to mend prisoners’ ways sincerely.

In this television drama series, romantic elements were added. It talked about Officer Man, as known as “Uncle Man”, was Yiu’s uncle (close friend of Yiu’s elder brother). Yiu fell in love with Uncle Man. However, he rejected Yiu initially because of the seniority and he did not want people, especially Yiu’s elder brother, to blame him as this violated the traditional Confucian values.

Later, Officer Man was hit by a group of gangsters, which was controlled by Yip (portrayed by Pal Sinn), one of the prisoners in the Stanley Prison, as Yip took revenge to Officer Man. And Yiu in order to protect Man being hit severely, she was hit and had been in a coma for a few days. Man felt guilty that he did not accept Yiu’s love for him and finally he accepted Yiu’s love.

Social issues
Different from the Western values “free to love”, being a Chinese sometimes needs to follow the traditional Confucian values. And in the Confucian values, it is not quite good to fall in love with your close friend’s younger sister as the above example.

On the other hand, this television drama series advocates the notion of “never too late to mend your ways”, for instance, even the prisoners who were in life imprisonment, if they would like to mend their ways to contribute to the society, they can even have the chance to gain the amnesty by the Commissioner of Correctional Services.

Iconography
The theme of this series was about HKCSD and audiences can find sharp toothbrush and some self-made weapons by the prisoners and the setting of this series was prison.

Online review on Swipe Tap Love(愛我請留言)

Swipe Tap Love is a drama which produced by TVB in 2013 and showed on television in 2014. This is the contemporary romance drama. The main characters in Swipe Tap Love are Yu Chor Gin who acted by Pricilla Wong and Lok Tin Sung who acted by Raymond Wong. The story line is goes around with the social life of Yu Chor Gin and Lok Tin Sung. This drama has brings out the situation that people communicate with others by the smart phone.
By the title name, it is not difficult to know the genre of this drama. The audiences can expect what they will see in the drama, such as love, message etc. As mentions before, this drama has brings out the situation that people communicate with others by the smart phone. From the iconography side, Swipe Tap Love brings out the people lack of communication because the trends on smart phone apps like whatsapp. Even though people can chat with others on those apps, they may not get the reply after the others were read. The one who was send the message should wait for the respond. Another situation is lie between people. Those people are chatting by typing words. People may lie by the text because it is hard for the receiver know it is a lie. For example, in episode 2, Yu’s boyfriend would like to have a drink with his friends and he types the words to send to Yu. However, he just types another situation and lie to Yu.
In Lok’s family, it shows the situation that man take the responsibilities on housework. In the day time, Lok has a job in a company. After work, he takes the housework and takes care of the child. Lok’s wife is a doctor. She cannot take care of the housework because the working time of her job is not stable. Their child was take care by Yu’s mother, mamayu when they both go for work. It is a trend in contemporary.
From characters side, the main characters in the drama are quite simple. They do not have a special role in the society. Both of them are an employee in the company. The linking of two families, Yu’s and Lok’s, seems to be mamayu. However, they had met each other before and they do not know.
In Swipe Tap Love, the date of 9th September in 2009 was point out by the Yu. People think that day is meaning as long as forever because the number of nine. By Yu’s script, someone find the important one in that day but also someone who cannot say goodbye to the important one. It brings out that something should speak to the one who you want to say to on time.
There is a special element through the drama. That is the background music in the drama. There are different songs, especially the songs which are popular in the past, in each episode. Those songs have brings out some collective memories when the songs play with the plot. For example, when Yu’s friend decides to date with her old friend, who is Lok’s friend, the background music is ‘Brave’ which sang by Miriam Yeung. The lyrics and the music are match to the situation and the audiences may have the collective memories when they listen to ‘Brave”.
To conclude, Swipe Tap Love is a typical romance drama of TVB. It lets people introspection the communication by using smart phone and the value of time.

Online review: An Inspector Calls 浮華宴 (2015)

浮華宴
An Inspector Calls (2015)

Country: Hong Kong
Category: IIA (Cantonese)
Starring: Louis Koo Tin-lok, Eric Tsang Chi-wai, Teresa Mo Shun-kwan, Chrissie Chau Sau-Na
Directors: Raymond Wong Pak-min, Herman Yau Lai-to

An Inspector Calls (浮華宴) is an 2015 Hong Kong black comedy film. The story is based on the British play An Inspector Calls. It is star-studded, cameo-filled and visually outrageous.

Raymond Wong Pak-min, the director, tries to bring something different. This film breaks the usual frame of New Year films of just being funny comedy. Instead, it comes with black humor. This story is about a notable family that receives an unexpected visit from an inspector at their lavish party to celebrate a couple’s engagement. Their joy turns gloomy when they find out that the inspector is there to investigate the suicide of a pregnant girl, whom the family members claim to have no relationship with.

The scenario of the film is meaningful as it reflects the criticism of the relationship between upper class and lower class people. "It will not only entertain the audience, but make them think as well," said Eric Tsang. Every dialogues has its implied meaning. And it pretty well reflects the dark side of human nature. Like Chrissie Chau’s role, it is the representative of lower people being oppressed in the society. While Teresa No, Eric Tsang, Gordon Lam and six other characters, representing the seven deadly sins of wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony.

It is obvious that producers put lots of hard work to dramatize some parts of the story to make it more expressive. Many scenes are added to make the film more interesting and lend more depth to each character. There are gorgeous CG effects, and stunning props creating a sumptuous and exaggerating effect.

For the genre study of this film. In my opinion, there is no definite genre for this film. It does not purely belong to the genre of comedies. Genre study examines fixed textual structure both semiotic and narrative, and its association with structure of society. According to Daniel Chandler (2000), “The classification and hierarchical taxonomy of genres is not a neutral and ‘objective’ procedure. There are no undisputed ‘maps’ of the system of genres within any medium.” This film is rather a mix of detective, drama and comedy.

To conclude, this film focuses on the discussion of humanity, it is very challenging to strike a balance between comedy and heavy social matter. People may think it is a bit less advantaged to be aired in New Year’s period as audiences may not expect a serious issue. But I think it is a good try and more new topics of films should be welcomed and supported.

Individual TV Drama Review: Shades of Life (我們的天空)

“Shades of Life” is a TV drama which produced and broadcasted by the Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) in 2014 summer programme, “TVB Amazing Summer”. It contains 12 episodes in total for representing recent social issues which faced by Hong Kong people nowadays. Different social issues like monster parents, Hong Kong-mainland contradictions, new immigrants, aging population, etc. were taken as the story themes in each episode. The protagonist, Ko’s family, acts as connection for the whole narrative by mentioning their daily living. In the following, I will mainly focus on the second episode, Bloody Brotherhood (同根生), for discussion since it drew many attentions from public and even displeased some audiences at that time.

Brief introduction of the second episode
In the second episode of “Shades of Life”, it mentions about the daily experiences of a new immigrant, Ah Mei (阿美) who moved from mainland China to Hong Kong. In the beginning, she was excited to come and live in Hong Kong. However, her fantasy was broken gradually after she arrived. Owing to the different cultural backgrounds, educational systems and self family problems, Ah Mei and her daughter could not adjust to the living in Hong Kong society. They felt hopeless and confused about the reason why they want to come to Hong Kong at first.

Construction of identities
The producer tried to mention some concepts of identities construction among Hongkongers in this TV drama. In the beginning of story, Ah Mei carried a big portmanteau for taking her personal belongings from mainland China to Hong Kong. However, some Hongkongers considered she as the grey goods trader.

Refer to the rude speaking of a Hongkonger towards Ah Mei, we can also recognize what the encoder want to point out, some stereotyped ideas of new immigrants among some Hongkongers.

Stereotyped idea of mainlanders can still be found in this TV drama. However, encoder may not recognize. It is the image of the newly rich people in mainland China. It seems that all of them like to shout and do impolite actions in public place. The producer missed to present the newly rich people in mainland China who are high educated and polite.

The story showed in a very simple, striking, easily-grasped form of representation but are none the less capable of condensing a great deal of complex information and a host of connotation (Dyers 2000, p.246-247).

Different meaning structures of encoder and decoder
Philip Elliott mentioned “Audience is both the ‘source’ and ‘receiver’ of television message.” (Hall 2000, p.53) For the encoder (TVB), they observe particular social issues and composed the story in telling audiences in Hong Kong the difficulties of new immigrants. At the same time, they tried to deliver the message, “we should be welcome and helpful to new immigrants with toleration because all of us are bloody brotherhood,” through this TV drama. If this message could be meaningfully decoded, it can have an ‘effect’ or be put to a ‘use’ (Hall 2000, p.53) for changing the concepts of Hongkongers. However, the organization of narrative and representation method led to lack of equivalent idea between two sides. For the decoder (Hongkongers), they thought the representation is single angled and too simple. The Communications Authority received over 3000 complaints of the second episode of “Shades of Life” three days after the broadcasting. Most of the complainants and Internet users noticed the producer (TVB) only mentioned the cases of hard-working new immigrants but the influences that they brought. At the same time, the TV drama constructed a bad image of Hongkongers unfairly that most of them do have stereotyped image of new immigrants and being rude and impolite to them. Some Hongkongers worried the distorted social status which represented in this TV drama may affect the international image of Hong Kong.

Conclusion
Producers should be careful in mass communications because production constructs messages. The organization of narrative and format of representation will directly influence audiences’ perspectives and ideologies. Improper presentation may lead misunderstanding among audiences. Refer to the case of “Shades of Life”, encoder should present the content in wider and deeper angle and prevent over-simplification.
